Kate introduced guest speaker, Craig Castree and thanked Craig for his second visit to speak to the Club. Craig explained how he grew about 85% of his own food on his small suburban garden in an area of 120 square metres. He emphasised:

  • Feed the soil not the plants so microbes in a healthy soil, in turn feed the plants
  • Importance of building back humus in our soils
  • Encourage plant diversity as in nature and use companion planting
  • Cut finished plants below the ground level and replace with new plants
  • Plant 2 to 3 food plants each day to ensure an ongoing food supply
  • Make the most of small spaces by growing vegetables and herbs in pots, hanging baskets or on vertical spaces such as fences and by using dwarf fruit trees and espaliered fruit trees
  • Use your own compost and bio-stimulants to enrich the soil
  • Harvest rain water from house/garage roof
  • Use tree canopies to shade house
  • Grow more of our own nutrient rich food for good health
  • Ideas for making food products at home, drying, pickling and preserving
