Pat and Kate welcomed Jennifer and Don Rickerby from RHSV and noted the importance of the RHSV for garden clubs such as CMGC including the provision of insurance. Jennifer and Don were congratulated on their long and outstanding contribution to the Society. Attention was drawn to the wealth of information on the RHSV website and the value of the Gardeners’ Gazette which is produced by the RHSV. The 177 year anniversary of the RHSV was acknowledged.

Don Rickerby provided a very interesting history of the RHSV from early beginnings in Melbourne, under John Pascoe Fawkner, to the present day. Don provided some fascinating, very early photos of Melbourne in the 1850’s. He highlighted some of the many achievements of the Society including:

  • Pivotal role in testing suitable plants to supply the food needs of the early colony
  • Experimental garden established in Burnley and establishment of Burnley College
  • ‘Royal’ title approved by Queen Victoria
  • Horticultural shows and exhibitions including the Hanging Basket Competition
  • Umbrella organisation for garden clubs around the country
  • Gardener’ Gazette
  • The annual event of Gardener’s Day Out at Deakin University
  • Horticultural award system

Jennifer Rickerby provided the opportunity for members to ask questions about their indoor plants and she provided some very useful advice in a short segment.

Winner of Door Prize: Heather won a large basket of garden product supplied by Jennifer and Don Rickerby.
