On Thursday 24thJune we went to Williamstown for our winter excursion. We started off the day with a delicious morning tea at The Rotunda fight on the beach on the esplanade.
We then strolled through the Botanic Gardens (established in 1850), which were very pretty even though it was winter!!
Next we spent an hour or so at the Historical Society Museum, which was very interesting. The Williamstown Historical Society Museum is housed in the Williamstown Mechanics' Institute, which was built in 1860 for the education, and library and meeting needs, of local workmen. Many of the old Mechanics' Institute buildings survive in the Australian state of Victoria, but all are now used for other purposes.
To the left of the entry hall are two rooms of displays, and it is in these rooms that the invaluable collection of model ships, nautical antiques and a large collection of photographs are held. There is also a price schedule for the old Williamstown Ferry, which carried cars and passengers between Melbourne and Williamstown before the Westgate Bridge was opened.
After lunch at the Williamstown RSL, we visited a small nursery before heading home.
